Childcare staff can train to become nursery managers in bootcamps designed to fill more than 160 nursery manager jobs in Greater Manchester.
A huge shortage of early years staff across all levels in the Greater Manchester area has triggered the launch of two bootcamps funded by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.
Current or aspiring team leaders as well as nursery managers can join the online bootcamps, run by early years training provider Realise. The training will last between six and 16 weeks.
Karen Derbyshire, operations director early years at Realise, said: “We are delighted to be part of the first Skills Bootcamp of its kind to be delivered in the UK.
“Unfortunately, we do see a number of managers or aspiring managers leaving the sector because of a perceived lack of career progression and we are confident this course plays a big part in addressing that.
“It will be beneficial to the individual who will progress their career and the nursery’s succession planning.”
Ms Derbyshire said the bootcamps will help those who:
• have been managers or team leaders for a long time but may not be carrying out full roles and responsibilities.
• have just moved into the role and require some additional support.
• are working in a nursery but aspire to take up a new position.
• have left the industry but are looking to return at, say, a team leader position.
The Room Leader Skills Bootcamp is the equivalent of Level 3 training. The Nursery Manager Skills Bootcamp will be targeted at Level 5 standard.
Both bootcamps cover compulsory subjects including how to have difficult conversations and leading people. The nursery managers’ bootcamp will also include commercial awareness, financial awareness and occupancy and marketing.
For people already working in the early years sector, their employers are required to contribute 10% of the costs for the Skills Bootcamp if it is an SME or 30 per cent for large operators with more than 250 employees.
