Mini Explorers Crabtree Hall – The UK’s First Recognised Farm School Nursery.

Mini Explorers at Crabtree Hall is proud to be the UK’s first recognised Farm School Nursery, offering a unique and enriching early years experience rooted in nature, outdoor learning, and farm life. Located on a working farm in the heart of the North Yorkshire countryside, the Mini Explorers provides children with daily opportunities to connect with the natural world.

From the youngest babies in the Baby Bunnies room to the confident pre-schoolers in Farm School Two, children explore fields, woodlands, and the wider Crabtree Hall estate. They engage with real-life learning through experiences such as feeding animals, planting crops, and observing seasonal changes. These experiences help to build confidence, independence, and a strong sense of curiosity about the world around them.

Mini Explorers promotes a deep understanding of animal welfare, food production, and environmental responsibility. Children are encouraged to take risks, solve problems, and build resilience through both guided activities and child-led exploration.

The dedicated team of Early Years Educators at Mini Explorers combines the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) with outdoor, farm-based learning. Children benefit from rich, hands-on experiences that promote physical development, emotional wellbeing, and social skills, all while fostering a lifelong respect for the environment.

With its strong focus on outdoor learning and meaningful experiences, Mini Explorers provides a truly special setting where children grow, thrive, and develop the foundations for a lifelong love of learning.

Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
Mini Explorers Nursery is categorically one of the best nurseries in our area. The staff are so attentive and are so knowledgeable about each individual child and how they are progressing. My son absolutely loves it here. He has been at Mini Explorers since he was six months old, and this nursery has
helped him to develop both socially and cognitively. They are amazing at keeping parents up to date throughout the day using the app, and there are always lovely photos on there to look at!
The fact that it is a farm nursery is one of the main perks in my eyes. All the children at Mini Explorers spend a huge amount of time outdoors and get to help feed and take care of the animals. My son is a particular fan of watching the tractor and Combine harvesters out in the fields and adores being able to run around and play in the sand pit!
If you’re looking for a place for your child, Mini Explorers is that place.
Best nursery ever.

Current Review Score: 8.9 (8.857)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.9 (8.857) out of 10 for Mini Explorers Nursery is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.1 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.781 for Mini Explorers Nursery is calculated as follows: ( (83 Excellents x 5) + (8 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 96 Ratings = 4.781
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.076 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Mini Explorers Nursery is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 93 number of registered child places is 18.6. 7 Positive Reviews ÷ 18.6 = 0.376
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
