Little Beacons is an educational Nursery for boys ages 3-4 based in Amersham, Buckinghamshire.

Little Beacons is an inspiring and nurturing educational Nursery based within a wonderfully spacious Early Years setting - The Oakway Building. Here, your son will take his first steps on his educational journey, supported and encouraged throughout by the dedicated Nursery team.

At Little Beacons, the aim is to encourage boys to develop a love and curiosity for learning while feeling happy, safe and secure.

The Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) Report in February 2022 rated The Beacon ‘EXCELLENT’ in all areas. Head to their website to read the full report.

Your son will learn through active independent and adult-led play, investigation and exploration. Due to high staff to pupil ratio, the Nursery team respond to the individual interests and learning needs of each boy and tailor an individualised education to inspire them.

The children benefit from having a fully qualified Teacher and Teaching Assistants as part of the caring Nursery staff. In addition to enjoying free-flow, play-led experiences, the Little Beacons are also introduced, via structured, adult-led sessions to French, numbers, shapes, measuring and Phonics, as well as Cooking, Swimming, PE, Music and Movement, Art, Library, Topic and Outdoor Learning activities.

The Beacon School Nursery is exceptional and has prepared my sons for reception brilliantly. Being part of a school environment provides significant benefits from amazing facilities (swimming, sports, music and drama) to wrap around care and the boys being comfortable attending a bigger school environment
helps with the transition into reception.
The nursery provides teaching excellence alongside the nurturing and warm environment of a small nursery.

I couldn’t recommend Little Beacons more! A truly lovely setting and the boys who go there are very lucky. Every member of staff is gentle, caring and nurturing, while also encouraging boys to be independent, confident and behave well.

Moving my son from his nursery was a difficult decision but I am so pleased that we did. He flourished in ways I could not have imagined being at Little Beacons and completely came out of his shell. His speech developed far faster than it had been doing and his confidence soared. He also delighted in
attending every day, so much so that he asked to attend full time by the second term. Attending Little Beacons has set him up perfectly for reception and I have no worries about the transition as a result. The staff have been fantastic, providing the perfect level of care and support and the activities that the boys have been able to enjoy this year have been amazing. I rave about Little Beacons to everyone who asks and am grateful for the fantastic start they have provided for my son at The Beacon School Nursery.

Lucy

Lucy Gordon

Job Title: Head of Pre-Prep Joined: 2015

MEd: University of Cambridge, MTheol: University of St Andrews, PGCE: University of Cambridge

Lucy joined The Beacon in 2015, and since then she has taught Year 1, as well as working as the Deputy Head of the Pre-Prep for the last four years.

Lucy is particularly interested in the ways that boys learn and prior to joining the school completed a research-based Masters of Education concerning boys opinions of writing. This was a fascinating insight and showed the benefits of creating a curriculum aimed specifically for boys.

In her spare time, Lucy enjoys reading and is very much looking forward to becoming the Pre-Prep Librarian and having the opportunity to share a range of books, genres and authors with the Little Beacons.

Claire

Claire Sharp

Job Title: Head of Early Years Joined: 2002

BA Joint Hons Education and Information and Library Studies. PGCE specialising in Early Years.

Claire has over 25 years of experience teaching young children, 20 of which have been at The Beacon, and she absolutely adores it. She has been instrumental in the set-up and success of our Little Beacons Nursery since its opening in September 2021.

Claire finds supporting and encouraging young children’s learning and development such a rewarding experience. From the moment a boy joins our Nursery, Claire embarks on a fun-filled adventure with them. Every day is different and that brings her so much joy. One minute she could be a superhero, saving the world with her trusty fellow superheroes, and the next she could be given a worm to hold, as a special gift from a boy and his curious peers.

Claire makes learning fun. She wants the boys to be passionate about the world in which they live. She strives for the boys to be excited to come to Little Beacons, to be fully engaged during the day and to leave with a smile on their faces.

In her free time, Claire enjoys going to the theatre.

Jenny

Jenny Grubb

Job Title: High Level Teaching Assistant Joined: 2002

BTEC National Diploma in Childcare and Education (Level 3). Higher Level Teaching Assistant. Level 3 Forest School Leader.

Jenny has been working in Early Years for over 20 years now, and she loves working with Nursery children specifically as they have such an infectious and inquisitive love for life and learning. She truly believes that we should all look at the world through the eyes of a 3-year old!

Jenny genuinely enjoys everything about her job! From helping our Little Beacons explore and learn about the world to supporting them to become independent. Hearing the words "Mrs Grubb, I did it myself!" is extremely joyful! She is proud to have been part of the set-up, launch and ongoing success of our Little Beacons Nursery.

Jenny loves being outside - her favourite place to be is by the sea, and she enjoys going on long walks and hiking with her family.

Lisa

Lisa Dunton

Job Title: Teaching Assistant Joined: 2005

NVQ level 3 in childcare and education.

Lisa has always had a passion for teaching in Early Years. Now with 17 years’ experience, she was delighted to embark on working with young children in Early Years as soon as she finished her education at school. She believes these years are very important in laying down the foundations for the future development of every child.

Her favourite part of the job is seeing the world through the eyes of a child, helping them to use their imagination to turn everyday objects into whatever the child chooses them to be.

Outside of work, Lisa enjoys spending time with her three children who are 12, 10 and 8 years old. She loves going to parks and visiting museums with her family.

Carrie-Anne loves caring and educating young children because they are like ‘sponges’ and soak up every activity, experience and opportunity presented to them. She finds it such a pleasure to be part of our Little Beacons young lives. Carrie-Anne is extremely passionate about each individual she teaches to become independent and unique at their own pace.

She is a mother of four boys ranging from the age of 22 down to 15 years of age. She adores family-time together and enjoys baking (sometimes her boys still offer to help!)

In her leisure time, Carrie-Anne enjoys travelling and having Summer holidays with family and friends.
