Recipient: The Old Forge Nursery
Date: Saturday 23 Sep 2023
Sustainable practices are incorporated into this nursery’s daily routines through a nature-based curriculum, so that children are equipped with the knowledge, skills and values necessary to become responsible and sustainable citizens for the future.
Children learn about the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling and they engage in hands-on activities including composting organic waste and tending to the nursery garden, which emphasises the concept of natural cycles and the value of preserving resources. During on-site Forest School sessions, they explore and observe the natural environment and learn about the importance of conserving biodiversity, protecting habitats and valuing the natural world. They develop a strong connection with nature through tree-planting and wildlife conservation projects.
By instilling a strong foundation of environmental awareness and sustainable practices, the nursery aims to equip children with the tools to become conscientious and active global citizens. This eco-friendly approach extends from the curriculum to creating a sense of environmental responsibility throughout the nursery community. It hosts environmental family workshops and events and joins up with local charities and conservation groups.
The commitment to sustainability can be seen at the nursery with the front of the property adorned with solar panels to enable them to generate clean, renewable energy, and they have recently invested in two electric mini-buses to decrease carbon emissions. A compostable toilet has been installed for use during Forest School and children help to grow vegetables from seed.
