New drop-in-baby creche opens in London

Article By: Rachel Baker, News Editor

A new concept “drop-in-creche” has opened in South London this week giving parents and guardians in the area emergency childcare at short notice.

The Baby Drop is the creation of two professional mums who were unable to find a flexible solution to childcare, that didn’t break the bank whilst they were on maternity leave.

The Baby Drop in Webbs Road, Wandsworth is for babies from birth to five-years-of-age. It can hold up to 15 children at a time and is open from 9am to 6pm from Monday to Friday and Saturdays on the run up to Christmas.

Toddlers and pre-schoolers are cared for in different areas according to their age and development. Children can be left for a maximum of 4 hours and no pre booking is required, however, a there is a minimum charge of one hour.

Mums, dads, grandparents and carers are welcome to look round the newly opened crèche which enables them the flexibility to have their children cared for if they need to take on last minute work projects, tackle household duties, visit appointments, or feel confident that they have a back-up solution if their usual childcare arrangements fall through.

Charlotte Butterfill, co-founder of The Baby Drop said: “As a new mum on maternity leave, there were so many occasions when I was wanting to go for a run, get my hair done or do some freelance work, but with my husband working long hours and both sets of parents living out of London, there wasn’t anything that was flexible and cost effective, certainly within the area so we saw a missed opportunity.

“The premises are centered in the middle of Northcote Road, the renowned nappy valley and area for young working families with young children and busy lives. Naturally all of our staff is qualified to minimum Ofsted requirements and between the team we can boast over 40 years’ experience of looking after young babies.”

Ellen de Naray, co-founder continued: “Of course, when it comes to dealing with young children and babies, safety and security are absolutely paramount. And as mums to young babies ourselves, we totally understand the need for parents to feel confident that their babies will be safe and feel loved whilst in our care and without a phasing in period.

“With this in mind, we have taken extra special effort to amuse, entertain and distract babies while under our supervision; so that before they know it their mums and dads are back at the door waiting to take them home again.

“We have a wonderful time singing nursery rhymes and playing games – we are literally on the floor with them the whole day long and the babies and us (!) just have the most wonderful time. It really is a dream career come true.”

Offering both membership and rates for non-members, it is flexible for either the regular or one off user.

An online booking system will be going live in November.
