Job Summary
ROOM LEADER PRE-SCHOOL REPORTING TO NURSERY DEPUTY MANAGER
The role of a senior nursery nurse is to work alongside the management team to provide a high level of professional leadership and management to all room-based staff and to ensure that all children receive the highest possible standards of physical, emotional, social and intellectual care and education.
Purpose
• Compliance with all regulatory requirements at all times.
• Provision of continuous high standards of care, education and safeguarding.
• Support for other room staff in their daily roles.
• Maintenance of a positive working partnership with all staff as well as our parents and carers.
• To work as part of a room team to provide an enabling room environment in which all children can play, learn and develop to their full potential.
Main Duties
• To support the room team members to develop the specific knowledge and skills required to work with children of this age group.
• Formulate and operate a programme of activities that meet the individual needs and interests of all children within the room in conjunction with other room members and the nursery management.
• Maintain records of your key children’s development and learning journeys, share this with parents, carers and other key adults in the child’s life and provide updates for parents, in conjunction with the nursery management.
• Support all team members with the early identification and intervention for children with possible special needs and give physical, emotional and intellectual guidance as appropriate.
• Support all team members to ensure they have the skills and knowledge required.
• Undertake appropriate supervision meetings/processes for all members in your team in conjunction with the nursery management.
• Attend nursery staff and management meetings and feed appropriate information back to your room team.
• Support all staff to engage in harmonious team working.
• Support team members to seek out any training or support they may
require to fulfil their roles and responsibilities.
• Support new team members through inductions in partnership
with the nursery management.
• Ensure all record keeping is accurate and up-to-date within your designated area, including learning journeys of all children in your room, sleep charts, accident forms, daily record sheets and any other forms/records required for the child’s welfare, learning and development.
• Ensure room checks and outdoor checks are conducted in line with nursery procedures.
• Liaise with and support parents and other family members as required.
• To be involved, as required, in out-of-working-hours activities, e.g. training, monthly staff meetings, parents' evening, fundraising events etc.
• Work alongside the nursery management and your room staff to ensure that the nursery ethos is clearly identified and fulfilled.
• Read, understand and adhere to all policies and procedures relevant to your role as deemed appropriate by the nursery management. Support your team members to do the same and ensure all policies and procedures are followed at all times.
• Ensure good standards of safety, hygiene and cleanliness are maintained at all times and be responsible for the health and safety standards appropriate for the needs of children under 5.
• Ensure someone known to and agreed by both the nursery and the parents collects each child at the end of the day.
• Ensure confidentiality of all information received by all team members in your area.
• Ensure that all children are kept safe at all times and that room staff are confident to follow all safeguarding procedures.
• Proactively promote the nursery to current and potential parents.
• Adhere to all health and safety policies and procedures at all times and undertake a shared responsibility for health and safety throughout the nursery.
Specific childcare tasks
• Identifying and facilitating the preparation and completion of activities to suit each individual child's stage of development and interests.
• Supporting all room staff to develop their respective role within the team, especially when acting as a key person.
• Ensuring mealtimes are structured to focus on social interaction and sharing.
• Washing and changing of the children as required.
• Ensuring any child showing signs of illness, e.g. a high temperature, is kept calm and that a management member is aware and, when necessary, to contact the child’s parents in order for the child to be collected.
• To develop and maintain strong partnerships and communications with parents/carers to facilitate day-to-day caring and early learning needs.
