We need more male early years professionals
For many men, the idea of working in childcare isn’t something they’ve ever considered – not because they wouldn’t be good at it, but because outdated stereotypes still linger. At Male Childcare & Teaching Jobs (MCTJ), we see this every day. We also see the incredible difference male educators make in children’s lives once they take the leap.
If you’re a man curious about working with young children, this article is for you. With 9 in 10 parents valuing both men and women in care, we’ll share tips to begin and how we can support you.
What are the benefits of men working in nurseries?
Children benefit from seeing positive role models of all genders. Having male practitioners in early years settings helps break down gender stereotypes for children, parents, and colleagues alike. It also reflects the diversity of real life – after all, children grow up surrounded by men and women in their families and communities.
Yet, despite these benefits, men still make up less than 3% of the early years workforce in the UK. This means that now, more than ever, we need men to join the profession and help balance the picture.
Tips for men wanting to work in early years
Starting a career in early years can feel like stepping into the unknown – especially if you’ve never seen many men doing the job. The good news is, men now have a strong network of male educators to stand with them.
Your gender doesn’t limit your ability to succeed here. What matters most is your commitment to children’s learning and wellbeing, your willingness to keep learning, and the confidence to bring your own strengths into the role. Here are some ways to get started on the right foot:
Challenge stereotypes in your own thinking
If you’ve been told childcare is “just for women,” remember that’s a misconception. Skills like empathy, communication, creativity, and patience aren’t tied to gender.
Get qualified
A recognised Level 2 or Level 3 childcare qualification is often the starting point. These can be gained through college, or a fully-funded apprenticeship while working in a setting.
Look for inclusive employers
Not every setting has the same culture. Seek out nurseries, schools, or apprenticeship providers that actively promote gender diversity and/or have other male staff members.
Gain hands-on experience early
Volunteering, work experience, or shadowing experienced practitioners can help you build confidence and skills.
Highlight your transferable skills
Whether you’ve worked in sports coaching, youth work, hospitality, customer service, or the armed forces, you’ll have developed transferable skills that are highly valuable in early years education.
Find a mentor
Having someone to guide you – especially another male educator – can make a big difference in your early career.
Be visible in your community
Attend local early years events, join forums, or training sessions. These are great opportunities to network and learn.
Learn about safeguarding
Understanding how to keep children safe is essential and shows employers you take the role seriously.
Develop strong communication skills
Your ability to build relationships with children, parents, and colleagues will be one of your greatest assets.
Stay open to continuous learning
The early years sector evolves constantly. Ongoing training will help you stay fresh, informed, and confident.
