Your suitability for a career in the childcare sector
When you attend an interview for a Nursery practitioner or Nursery assistant role, the company will be trying to assess your suitability for a career in the childcare sector as well as whether you’ll fit in with their company ethos and values.
Whilst you can’t be sure of the exact questions you’ll be asked in an interview, being aware of the types of questions that could be asked will help you feel as prepared as possible.
Generally, questions are broken down into 3 categories – Technical questions, personality questions and questions based around your previous experience.
Example nursery interview questions you may be asked:
Why do you like working with children?
This is a question that will likely be asked to understand your motivations for working with children and following a childcare career path. You can draw from your professional experiences here, maybe you did some work experience in a nursery which inspired you. Alternatively, you can draw from your personal experience which could be looking after a younger relative or family friend.
What qualifications do you have?
If you’re interviewing for a Nursery Nurse role, you will need to show that you have a Level 2 or 3 qualification in Childcare. If you have any further qualifications, then make sure to mention these here as well.
How familiar are you with the early years curriculum?
The early years curriculum is different in each country in the UK and sets standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old. A nursery setting will want to know your understanding of the framework and how you will apply it to your daily work.
What qualities do you think you’ll bring to the role?
When you think of a Nursery practitioner, you think of someone who is compassionate and kind as well as patient. Try and think of an example of a time you have shown these qualities.
What is your understanding of Safeguarding?
Safeguarding is a key concept in the childcare sector, so having an understanding of this is really important. An interviewer will want you to be able to show your understanding of the concept and how it relates to the role of a Nursery practitioner.
Can you provide an example of working within a team?
Communication and teamwork are vitally important within a nursery setting. A potential employer will want to know that you’re a team player and can contribute to a team environment.
