Children learn together in a shared environment, giving younger children the opportunity to learn from older peers while helping older children build confidence, independence and kindness. This approach encourages strong friendships and creates a natural, family-like atmosphere.
The nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with experienced practitioners planning engaging activities that support children's individual interests and stages of development. Daily experiences include creative play, stories, music, sensory exploration, role play, physical activity and opportunities to develop early language, mathematical and social skills through play.
Each child has a dedicated key person who builds a strong relationship with both the child and their family. By understanding each child's routines, interests and individual needs, staff provide consistent support and regular communication to help children thrive.
A carefully planned settling-in programme allows children to become familiar with the nursery gradually, helping them build confidence, develop trusting relationships and feel comfortable in their new surroundings.
Flexible session options are available to support the needs of different families. The working-parent hours depend on each parent meeting the minimum earnings rules and earning under £100,000 a year. This nursery applies funded hours during term time only. Truly the best nursery - we love it so much! Our son was at Little Starlings for 3 years and is now off to school. Our 3 year old daughter is there and our baby son will follow. Our children have grown so much in confidence and ability at LS. The nursery is not too big so the staff child ratio is excellent - each child gets plenty of care and attention and forms such lovely bonds with the staff. The staff are wonderful and so kind, and the children do so many fun and creative activities and outings. The nursery has a great outside space and the children learn about gardening each week.
Most importantly, our children run in to nursery happily every morning and have so much fun. I am always confident that they are in great hands in a very safe and nurturing environment. Little Starlings feels like a big family where the staff really care about the children and it is a home away from home. We couldn't wish for a better environment and prep for school.

Little Starlings is the most delightful, loving little preschool. They have devoted and experienced staff who adapt to the needs of every individual child. My daughter has grown so very much socially, emotionally and in her learning here and I wouldn't have wanted her anywhere else (she's starting school in September). My son has followed her to Little Starlings and in his short time there so far has progressed so much with his language skills. My children absolutely love their experienced nursery workers and it's clear from every interaction how much they care for the children. It is a truly wonderful and unique preschool and we are lucky to have it here in Balham!

Our youngest daughter has just finished at Little Starlings (our eldest also attended), and I cannot thank the team enough for how incredible they have been. The development we've seen with our girls, from little toddlers to confident young children who are excited to learn and excited to explore, is just a joy.
All the staff at Little Starlings is so generous with their time and attention, and my eldest still talks about her time there. I would recommend anyone who wants a friendly, nurturing, and truly incredible place for their child to learn and grow should look at Little Starlings. If I had more children, they would 100% be going there.

Having a mixed-age room means the older ones really do take the younger ones under their wing, and watching that unfold with siblings and friends over the years is one of the loveliest parts of what we do here in Balham.
