Clifton College Preschool provides a warm, nurturing and stimulating environment where children feel safe, valued and eager to learn. The highly experienced Early Years team places each child’s wellbeing at the centre of daily life, creating a welcoming setting in which confidence and curiosity can flourish. This is supported by a strong commitment to professional excellence, with all practitioners trained to the highest standards - including qualified Early Years Teachers - and every staff member holding Paediatric First Aid certification.

Play and child-led learning sit at the heart of the Preschool’s philosophy. Small class sizes allow staff to tailor activities to each child’s interests, fostering independence, engagement and critical thinking. Thoughtfully designed indoor and outdoor environments act as a 'third teacher', encouraging exploration and collaboration, whether through sensory play or hands-on discovery in the Forest School garden.

Daily routines balance structure with freedom through circle time, story sessions, outdoor choosing time and purposeful activities. Specialist teaching enriches the curriculum: the Forest School is led by an expert practitioner, while Music, French and PE sessions are delivered by subject specialists who inspire creativity, language development and physical confidence.

Strong communication keeps parents closely connected to their child’s journey through daily interactions and online learning diaries that celebrate progress in real time. Families also benefit from wraparound care from 7.30am to 6pm and nutritious meals prepared by the in-house catering team.

As children approach Reception, the ‘Getting Ready for Reception’ programme ensures a smooth, confident transition into the next stage of school life. Clifton College Preschool is a joyful, inspiring setting where young learners are encouraged to explore, discover and thrive within a caring and vibrant community.

We are so pleased with Clifton preschool. Our daughter started in January this year and the progress she has made already is wonderful to see. The staff are caring, supportive, and create such a warm and welcoming environment. She has settled in really well. We couldn't be happier with our choice and

My son started at the preschool in January. He settled really quickly and loves his time there, thanks to the welcoming, supportive and experienced staff. The days are well structured with a variety of different and interesting activities. My son particularly loves being outside, learning through doing
and exploring. They have a number of different outdoor spaces, a well equipped forest garden on site, as well as a forest school a short mini bus ride away. Finding bugs and hot chocolate with a biscuit was one of this week's highlights!

My son needs to wear an eye patch couple of hours a day and the staff have been very helpful in making that happen everyday which can be very challenging. Very warm and reliable team.

Current Review Score: 9.3 (9.264)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.3 (9.264) out of 10 for Clifton College Preschool is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.3 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Day Nursery is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.983 for Clifton College Preschool is calculated as follows: ( (58 Excellents x 5) + (1 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 59 Ratings = 4.983
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.281 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Clifton College Preschool is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.5
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the number of registered child places in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery registered for a maximum of 50 child places has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 32 number of registered child places is 6.4. 5 Positive Reviews ÷ 6.4 = 0.781
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Day Nursery does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Melissa Sylvester

Job Title: Assistant Head, Early Years and English Lead Joined: 2018

My name is Melissa, and I have over 25 years of teaching and leadership experience in education, primarily dedicated to the Early Years phase. Throughout my career teaching children up to age 8, I have developed a deep-rooted passion for a child-centred, caring approach. There is nothing more rewarding than the joy of seeing a child achieve a new milestone; those moments of discovery are at the heart of everything I do.

In my previous roles on Senior Leadership Teams, I gained experience leading teams and cohorts of children, ensuring high standards across the board. I have worked closely with Local Authorities, universities, and other establishments to implement new initiatives, which have directly resulted in raising pupil attainment and improving educational outcomes.

Currently, as Assistant Head and Early Years Lead, a role that brings me immense pleasure as I oversee the journey of our youngest children in the Foundation Stage, ensuring they benefit from a curriculum that is both fun, play-based, and deeply relevant. I am committed to developing Early Years pedagogy both within our school and across the wider sector. To support this, I established a local network for Independent Schools with Early Years settings, fostering a collaborative space for educators to share expertise. This initiative helps develop our staff’s pedagogical knowledge, which in turn creates the best possible learning environment for our pupils. By working closely with our parents, carers, and the professional community, I ensure we are all working together to give our children the best possible start in life.

Knowing that each day our team contributes so meaningfully to our Preschool children’s development is a privilege, and that sense of fulfillment continues to spread as we see our Preschool community growing and flourishing.

Job Title: Preschool Teacher Joined: 2023

Hi, my name is Laura, and I am the Preschool Class teacher. Before joining Clifton College, I gained experience in a range of schools across Bristol and in an international school in Berlin, Germany. Before teaching, I worked in outdoor education, where I was fortunate to spend time in many different countries working with various age groups.

When working with children, I aim to support their independence and development by ensuring they feel empowered and have choices in their learning. I believe the happiest children are those who feel secure in their environment.

Step into my classroom, and you’ll feel warmth, joy, and a big helping of fun! Children are encouraged to explore freely, question their surroundings, and demonstrate a curiosity that craves new experiences and discoveries.

Josie Pickles

Job Title: Preschool Teacher Joined: 2018

My name is Josie. I have worked at Clifton College since 2018, and I can honestly say it still feels like a privilege to walk through the doors each morning. Over the years, I’ve taught children up to the age of eight, and those early stages of learning are so special. Being part of that journey, when everything is new and exciting, is something I never take for granted.

I’m passionate about creating an environment where children feel safe, inspired and confident to try new things. There is nothing more rewarding than watching their progress over the course of a year. Seeing their confidence grow and their personalities shine. One of the things that makes Clifton College Preschool such a fantastic place to work is the small class sizes as they allow me to truly get to know each and every child. All their strengths, their challenges, and the little quirks that make them who they are. Understanding their individual needs means I can support and stretch them in the right ways, helping them to thrive. The close relationships we build, both with the children and their families, make the school feel like a genuine community.

Teaching is something I care deeply about. Working with young children brings so much joy and purpose to my days and to play a small part in shaping their early experiences of school and learning is an honour.
