Woodentots Nursery is a purpose-built day nursery located within HMS Collingwood in Fareham, providing childcare and early education for children aged 4 months to 5 years. The nursery supports military families by offering a safe, welcoming environment for children of serving personnel, MOD civil servants and authorised contractors with access to the establishment.
Children learn through play in four bright, age-appropriate rooms designed to encourage confidence, curiosity and independence. Following the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), experienced practitioners create engaging experiences based on each child's interests, helping them develop socially, emotionally and academically. A dedicated key person builds strong relationships with children and families, supporting every stage of their learning journey.
Each room benefits from direct access to secure outdoor learning spaces where children can explore, play and stay active every day. Children also enjoy regular Forest School sessions, providing opportunities to investigate the natural environment, solve problems and build resilience through hands-on experiences.
Freshly prepared meals are cooked on site by their qualified cook, with mealtimes encouraging independence and positive social interaction.
Children enjoy a wide range of activities including creative arts, sensory play, music, storytelling, role play and outdoor exploration, supporting all areas of development.

As a military family, finding the right childcare was incredibly important to us, and Woodentots has exceeded all of our expectations. The staff understand the unique challenges that service families can face and have always been supportive, flexible and understanding. The team have built such a strong relationship with our child, and it is clear how much they care. Knowing that our child is safe, happy and well looked after allows us to focus on work without worrying. What stands out most is the genuine kindness of the staff. They always make time for parents, communicate well and go the extra mile to support children when they need a little extra reassurance. We feel incredibly lucky to have found Woodentots and would not hesitate to recommend it to other military families.

Emma joined Woodentots as an apprentice in 2001 and has spent her entire early-years career at the nursery. After completing her Level 3...
Emma joined Woodentots as an apprentice in 2001 and has spent her entire early-years career at the nursery. After completing her Level 3 qualification, she progressed to Nursery Manager in 2006. Emma has since completed further Level 4 childcare and Level 5 management qualifications and is also a trained Designated Safeguarding Lead.
Emma manages the day-to-day running of Woodentots and has an exceptional understanding of the nursery, its children, families and team. She is deeply committed to ensuring that children’s wellbeing, happiness and learning remain at the heart of every decision.
Her favourite part of her role is seeing children grow and develop during their time at Woodentots, celebrating the individual milestones and achievements they make along the way. Having worked at the nursery for so many years, Emma has also had the very special experience of welcoming back some of the children she once cared for, both as parents bringing their own children to Woodentots and as members of the nursery team.
Emma works closely with staff and families to provide children with consistent relationships, familiar routines and a nurturing environment in which they can feel secure, confident and ready to learn.

Lucy joined Woodentots in 1996, just one month after the nursery first opened. Having previously worked as a private nanny, she joined the team as an Early Years Practitioner before progressing to Deputy Manager and then Nursery Manager. In 2002, Lucy took over the nursery alongside her partner, Martin.
Lucy has continued to develop her knowledge throughout her career and holds a degree in Early Years Leadership and Early Years Teacher Status. Today, as Owner and Director, she leads the strategic development of Woodentots, creating the systems, processes and working practices that enable the nursery team to focus their time and attention on providing high-quality care and education for children.
Lucy is particularly passionate about ensuring that Woodentots provides a calm, consistent and familiar environment. This is especially important for service families, whose lives may involve postings, deployments and other periods of change. She believes that dependable relationships, familiar routines and a spacious environment help children feel secure, settled and ready to learn.
After so many years at Woodentots, one of Lucy’s greatest privileges has been seeing children she once cared for return to the nursery as parents and even as members of the Woodentots team. Martin also remains a familiar face at the nursery, greeting children and families as they arrive each day.
