The gardening gloves have been out at Brinds Well Day Nursery in Hawstead Lane in Orpington with the creation of a brand new vegetable patch.
This project at the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery has been months in the making with the 2-3 year olds helping with both the design and planting of the garden. The children were asked which edibles they would like to grow and vegetables were then planted from seed. Children became co-researchers as they learned what care plants need to grow well. Nursery Manager Nichola Cass said:
“The creation of a vegetable patch is a wonderful addition to our fabulous garden facilities. We have all been really impressed with the commitment and nurture that the children have demonstrated in growing these plants. Growing vegetables offers range of different learning experiences for children as well as encouraging them to engage in physical education in an outdoor setting.”
The harvested vegetables were then sold on a stall in nursery to raise money for the disabled children’s charity, Children Today.
