Kiddi Caru’s Whiteley day nursery has introduced weekly communication and language groups to help the preschool children in its care to hone their communication skills in a small group environment.
The emphasis is very much on having fun and giving staff the opportunity to give special attention to small groups of children to encourage language and vocabulary development. As well as making it much easier for the children to use their listening skills – an important part of communicating – the groups also enable the staff to provide extra support to any children with speech delay.
Annie Smith, Senior Nursery Manager, said: “Listening is vital to developing good all round communication and language skills but it is not always easy in large groups. Also working in smaller groups can be very beneficial for children who perhaps aren’t as outgoing as their friends or for whom English is an additional language. The communication and language groups are already reaping rewards with the children taking part coming on in leaps and bounds both in terms of their communication skills and confidence.”
