Children at Kiddi Caru Caldecotte are enjoying their new sensory room, which is providing children aged three months to five years old with new and exciting sensory experience.
The purpose built sensory room provides a quiet, calm environment for the children at the nursery of all ages in which to explore new technology. Its bubble tubes and fibre optics encourage investigation and interaction. The equipment is controlled by the children - items that they touch will change colour, make noises and change the patterns of lights. The room is also multi-sensory, giving the children the opportunity to discover their senses with different sounds, smells and textures.
Staff at the nursery can provide different experiences in the room by changing the brightness or the music to create different atmospheres, keeping children engaged and eager to explore and learn each time they visit the room.
To celebrate the launch of the new room, the nursery is holding a free Discovery Week with three stay and play sessions a day from Monday 30 January. Each day will have a different theme:
Monday – natural activities and treasure basket play
Tuesday - Exploring Light, creating glowing sensory bottles, shadows, light box
Wednesday – space, solar system sensory room, shiny resources, creating shiny CD planets
Thursday – textures, exploring textures in sensory room, textured painting, foaming paint
Friday – under the sea sensory room, water play, water colour painting, creating sensory jelly fish
Lucy Clarke, Nursery Manager, said: “The new sensory room has created a real buzz and the reactions from both children and parents who have used it indicate that it is going to be a valuable facility to have in the nursery. Since it has opened we’ve found it to be particularly beneficial to children who have additional needs, although the design of the sensory room and the equipment it contains make an accessible and enjoyable experience for all children.”
