Newbury pre-schoolers send ‘smiles’ to the local community

Children at Pelican Day Nursery in Newbury have plenty to smile about every day, but on Friday they staged a ‘happy thoughts’ balloon release to make locals smile too.

As part of World Smile Day the pre-schoolers, aged between six weeks and five-years-old at the nursery in Pelican Lane, added happy messages - like two-year-old Poppy Jameson’s 'I’m happy because I’m playing on the bike' - to balloons and released them.

Pelican manager, Sian Elliott, explained fun is an essential ingredient of all activities at the nursery and ‘sharing’ is one of many important life lessons all children learn through play. She said: “We love themed days in nursery and this one has certainly captured everyone’s imagination, staff included. Maddie Brown made us all very happy with her message. 'I’m happy and smiley because I’m at nursery'. It really doesn’t get better than that."

In addition to the messages for the balloon release the children were also busy in the crafting and painting areas at the nursery creating ‘happy’ works of art.
