Children at Kiddi Caru’s Wellingborough day nursery have been experimenting with using real tools as part of regular woodworking sessions.
Using ‘real tools’ rather than pretend versions in a carefully monitored environment can provide lots of learning for the children.
The woodworking sessions help to enhance the children’s motor skills and allows them to build confidence in their own abilities. Children are also educated that using tools incorrectly could be dangerous and so encourages self-monitoring.
Emma Whitworth, Nursery Manager, said, “The children have really embraced the idea of using real tools and we have seen some great development since the start of the woodworking sessions. We do of course have ‘pretend’ versions for the younger children or those who are less confident. Who knows we may have the next Handy Andy in our numbers.”
