Children and staff at Kiddi Caru’s Taunton day nursery reaped the rewards of a special garden project launched in May.
Garden magazine writer and mum of one of the pre-school children, Helen Billard spent a day at the nursery demonstrating how to create a fabulous vegetable and fruit garden.
Helen and the children planted cucumbers, strawberries, French beans and courgettes spending time talking to the children and explaining about how the vegetables grow and what the children need to do to help them to grow.
The children have now been busy harvesting all the fruit and vegetables from their garden and have been trying the tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries and broad beans. The nursery’s cook has also been using the courgettes and runner beans in the children’s lunches.
Emma Trott, Deputy Nursery Manager, said: “The children really enjoyed their planting day but I think they have enjoyed harvesting and eating the produce even more. The children were really amazed at the size of some of the vegetables they picked using describing words such as huge an massive to describe them.”
