Article By: Nina Hathway, News Editor

A coalition of leading charities, teachers and businesses, Read On Get On, has launched a nationwide giveaway of ‘story starters’ in partnership with Ladybird Books to help families chat with their young children to develop language and communication skills.

The story starters feature much loved children’s characters, such as Peppa Pig, Ben & Holly and Topsy & Tim, in fun everyday situations that help families create stories wherever they are.

Parents can access all the material by going online at, choosing a story packed with fun activities for a child that can also be downloaded to read them on the go.

Speech and language therapist Kate Freeman said: “Studies find that if children don’t have strong language skills at age five they can get left behind when they start school and struggle to learn to read. That’s why it’s so important for adults to chat with children to help them develop the essential language skills needed to be ready to read when they enter the classroom.”

The Read On Get On campaign’s long-term aim is to get all 11-year-olds reading well by 2025.
