This April, Young Sussex Nurseries in Brighton, Hove and Shoreham have launched Forest School classes for their pre-school children led by Katie Scanlan, a fully trained Level 3 Forest School Leader from The Outdoors Project (‘Best After School Club in the UK’ 2014).
Julia Cross, Group Manager at Young Sussex Nursery says; “We strive to provide the very best opportunities for our children to learn and develop; Forest School offers a new learning experience which engages the children and develops their team work, skills and motivation as well as their care and concern for living things and the environment.”
The seasonal, weekly classes are held in the nursery gardens and local parks. Forest School sessions are free and inclusive to children attending Young Sussex and run during the nursery day. Forest School is a concept adapted from Scandinavian ‘Nature Nurseries’, which were set up to allow children regular access to the outdoors, with the philosophy of child-led learning. The aim of Forest School is to improve confidence, self-esteem and independence in children, as well as a respect for their outdoor environment.
Activities such as treasure hunts, mini beast hunting, mud painting and digging greatly support children’s learning and their pride in, and understanding of, their surrounding environment; Julia comments.”
