Teachers at the inner-city located St Michael’s Nursery are delighted with the results of an outdoor play renovation, designed to make the most of space previously felt to be ‘uninspiring’.
Having worked with outdoor specialists Playgarden, the nursery is now showcasing a new design based on free-flow play, with features that combine to help develop each child’s aptitude for imaginative learning, creativity and exploration.
St Michael’s headteacher Samantha Cosgrove comments: “Working with Playgarden has been great, their Landscape Architect was quick to seize the opportunities of the space and the finished designs were beautiful.
“The play area is being very well used, although the staff are still learning about the best way to make the most of the site, they can already see the wonderful opportunities it gives the children. It has certainly got people talking, we have had several headteachers from neighbouring schools come out to look at the site and have received so many compliments.”
Fresh features include a new sand and water zone, a mini-road network for wheeled toys, a concrete pipe den and a series of grass mounds running alongside a richly planted area.
A budget of £100,000 enabled St Michael’s to achieve its objectives and a layout that is now in place to benefit children attending the nursery for many years to come.
