Wiltshire nursery closed by Ofsted after woman arrested

Article By: Julia Corbett, News Editor

Regulatory inspection body Ofsted has closed the Little Angels Nursery located in Calne, Wiltshire after a woman was arrested on Saturday.

A Notice of Suspension posted outside the nursery stated: “The purpose of the suspension is to allow time to investigate the belief that a child may be exposed to a risk of harm and for any necessity steps to be taken to eliminate or reduce the risk of harm.”

Staff members from the nursery have been informing parents that the nursery has been closed by Ofsted and will remain shut until 25 September 2014.

A spokesman for Wiltshire Police said: "We can confirm that police are conducting an investigation into allegations relating to Little Angels Nursery in Calne.

"We can confirm that one woman, aged 37, was arrested on Saturday 16 August, and was taken to Melksham police station. She has since been released on police bail. Enquires continue.”

Rachel Cartmell, owner and manager of Little Angels Nursery has confirmed she was not the person arrested and said: “As a director of Little Angels nursery I've been served with a Notice of Suspension for 6 weeks by Ofsted.

"I've not been arrested and am unable to make any comment at this time. "My staff and I are fully cooperating with the police and other agencies involved in the investigation."

The spokesman for Wiltshire Police continued: "We are in the early stages of an investigation and it would be inappropriate to comment further on this matter."

Any parents of children at the nursery, who have concerns, have been advised to contact Social Services.
