There wasn’t ‘a dry eye’ at Pelican Day Nursery, in Newbury as staff said goodbye to their graduating class with a party.
The 20 graduates of the nursery in Speenhamland School, Pelican Lane, wore special ‘mortar board’ hats and gowns as they performed their graduation song which was composed with the help of practitioners.
As Pelican Manager, Lyndsey Burns explained, the graduation party – featuring a Punch and Judy and magic show - is always an occasion for mixed emotions:
“Everything we do here is focused on sending happy, confident and fully prepared children into mainstream schooling. We are celebrating that today but saying goodbye to children we have looked after since they were babies is very difficult,” she said.
One of the ‘stars of the show’ was four-year-old Olivia Bonnett who has been at the nursery for three years; two of them with Jilly Saunders her ‘Key Person’ and now pre-school room leader.
“I have watched Olivia develop beyond all expectations and know she will do very well at her new school. She is a truly lovely girl and so ready for the next step in her learning journey. I will miss her,” she said.
