Children and staff from Kiddi Caru’s Wellingborough day nursery have been enjoying a week of reading and stories as part of National Bookstart Week (9th – 15th June).
The Bookstart programme is run by Booktrust, an independent charity dedicated to encouraging people of all ages and cultures to engage with books.
The Bookstart week was held to encourage families to read with their child every day and this year’s theme is ‘My Hero’ which provided the perfect opportunity for the children to enjoy all their favourite hero stories, books and rhymes.
Children at the nursery have been dressing up as their favourite ‘Hero’ character and have also been able to take their favourite books home to share and read with their families.
Emma Whitworth, Nursery Manager, said: “Bookstart week is so important as it encourages families to read and enjoy books together. We are also linking up with our local library as part of their Passport scheme.
“Basically if a child is a library member, they can join the Bookstart Bear Club and receive a Bear Club Passport. Children collect paw stamps for borrowing books, sharing books and attending rhymetimes activities. Each time a child collects six stamps they get a certificate.
“If we can encourage children to love and enjoy books from a young age they will become lifelong readers. It is such an important skill and one that gives children and adults immense pleasure so we have been delighted to participate in this awareness week.”
