There wasn’t ‘a dry eye’ at Sandfield Day Nursery, in Headington, Oxford, as staff said goodbye to their graduating class with a party on Thursday. The 26 graduates wearing special ‘mortar board’ hats made by practitioner, Penny Saunders, were treated to a party complete with magic and puppet shows, disco, games and a special tea.
As Sandfield Manager, Kim Hambridge, explained the leavers party – an ‘animal’ themed event at the request of the children - is always an occasion for mixed emotions:
“Everything we do here is focused on sending happy, confident and fully prepared children into mainstream schooling. We are celebrating that today but saying goodbye to children we have looked after since they were babies is very difficult,” she said.
Four-year-olds Hannah Day, Gabriel Ferreira, and Hannah Watkinson have been at the nursery in Sandfield Road the longest and like their ‘graduating’ class each received a certificate with their handprint, photograph in cap and messages from staff.
Nursery cook Tracy Clarke created the animal themed cake for the graduation party
