The Mayor and Mayoress of Southampton have a hot date with a chilled out Snowman on Saturday.

Derek and Christina Burke will be meeting the famous character from author Raymond Briggs’s magical children’s book – plus scores of local children with their mums and dads at a special ‘Winter Wonderland’ Open Day event at Westwood Park Day Nursery, Winn Road, Portswood.

Tonia Chilcott, nursery manager explained: “Our lovely Victorian building and garden area have just undergone a massive £110,000 refurbishment programme and we wanted to celebrate the completion of the works in real style. It’s edging closer to Christmas so we decided on a ‘Winter Wonderland’ theme and invited The Snowman to come and chill out with the children. Plus, we plan to have a host of cuddly animals from a local petting zoo too. It’s an open invitation to local parents to come and see exactly what our state-of-the-art nursery can now offer their children.”

She added: “The Mayor will cut a special ribbon to mark the nursery’s facelift – which includes a fantastic new garden area, complete with new climbing apparatus; growing and digging beds and a special stage area where our children can put on shows undercover. Inside the nursery itself we have a superb new-look baby room facility that can now accommodate up to fifteen babies.”

The nursery, which has an Ofsted ‘Good’ rating, is part of the nationwide Asquith Day Nurseries group. The Open Day event on Saturday will run from 10 am – 1pm. www.asquithdaynurseries.co.,uk
