Leaving your child in the care of someone else is a difficult decision for any parent. You want to be sure that they are safe, well looked after and happy. Creating a safe and welcoming environment for your child is top priority at Corner House Nursery, Hillsborough.
The nursery was opened by the present owner Lynne Shaw 18 years ago. Lynne previously had a smaller nursery called ‘Stepping Stones’, which due to its glowing reputation, outgrew the small premises. In 1993, Lynne moved the nursery to the larger premises in Hillsborough and opened Corner House Nursery.
Lynne has recently retired but remains very involved in the nursery. Keeping it in the family, Lynne’s daughter, Faye joined the nursery last year to take on the role of Business and Finance Manager. She works very closely with Samantha who has been the Childcare Manager for the past 20 year. The nursery also boasts a dedicated and experienced team of staff many of whom have trained and worked at Corner House for several years.
Corner House Nursery understands that a child’s early years are the building blocks of life and all the staff are committed to giving each child the best possible start. The nursery takes children from six months to five years and offers the highest standards in child care and education. There are two baby units for children between 6 months and two years; one nursery unit for two to three year olds; and two pre-school classrooms for children aged from 3 years to school age.
Not only does the nursery provide children with a great place to have fun, there is also a strong focus on the importance of early education. The curriculum is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage Document "Every Child Matters", produced by the department for Education and Skills. The youngest children are encouraged to learn through interesting and exciting play opportunities, planned by experienced staff. As the children get older their learning experiences become more structured and they will experience more group opportunities, developing their understanding of friendship, co operation, caring, sharing and fair play.
All food for the children is prepared fresh onsite each day by a skilled cook who provides nutritious, well-balanced meals and snacks. In January this year the children came back from Christmas to a brand new kitchen area, allowing them to join in with the preparation of their meals. The kitchen has been fully refurbished and extended into one of the classrooms making room for an area where children can safely get involved and enjoy preparing meals and helping to bake, which they all really enjoy.
Corner House is also fortunate to have four beautiful and exciting outdoor play areas, which all offer different experiences. The Adventure Playground is a lovely natural area with mature trees and shrubs, excellent for collecting conkers and leaves in the autumn and a nice shady place in the summer. This area has fixed wooden equipment for climbing, sliding and balancing and is used all year round due to the all weather play surface. The Yard is a great place for pedalling a bike, riding a scooter, playing in the sand or painting a big picture. The Nature Garden is a wonderful place to explore with lots of plants with different colours, textures and smells. There are mini beasts to be found here and you can feed the birds. The Garden, which has a large pirate ship in the middle, is fantastic for imaginary play and in the spring and summer the children grow their own vegetables and flowers.
Corner House Nursery is open from 8am until 6pm, Monday to Friday all year round. There are currently some places for babies available to start at Corner House Nursery in September so for more information or to arrange a visit, contact the friendly team of staff. Your child will get a free Corner House Teddy when you bring them to visit.
