Little Horseshoe Nursery

St Peter's First School, Doniford Road, Williton, Taunton TA4 4SF

Little Horseshoe Nursery in Williton is managed by Pre-School Learning Alliance and situated on the site at St Peters First School.

Williton has been designated as serving an averagely disadvantage area of Somerset, and more recently has been identified as an area for government funding initiative and is part of a project looking at:
•        Recognising and value the diverse knowledge and experience of practitioners within the early years sector in Somerset and the sector wide benefit of sharing this.
•        Build and sustain high quality practice in the settings
•        Increase capacity and plan succession in early years workforce

The nursery operates from one large room for the children age 2-5 years and a large portioned area for the under two years.

All resources are accessible for the children to independently choose from. There is access to the garden area from both the baby room and the older room and staff are working towards free flow to enable children the opportunity to learn in the environment their choose to be.

The nursery kitchen has a large opening from the older room, which allows many learning opportunities for the children, who work with the cook to prepare snack, pour drinks and even take the vegetables to the compost.

The baby room has a small sensory room which is used daily and it has an area where babies can look at books and relax, whilst looking at photographs of their own families.

Overview

The Review Score of 9.4 (maximum of 10) for Little Horseshoe Nursery is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 13 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Little Horseshoe Nursery in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Day Nursery / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Day Nursery receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.603 for Little Horseshoe Nursery is calculated as follows: ( (109 Excellents x 5) + (36 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 156 Ratings = 4.603

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Day Nursery to friends and family?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Day Nursery with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.811 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Little Horseshoe Nursery is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 7.4 positive Reviews (37 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 6 Reviews ÷ 7.4 Target = 0.811

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

My son loves spending his days at nursery.
He has learnt so much and developed his speech in a short time. He can happily sing songs to me once he’s home in the evening.

The staff are always professional, patient and make every effort to ensure your child's needs are met. Documentation and record keeping is rigorous and the information is always available to me. Above all, he has fun, in a safe environment. I feel that my confidence has grown, largely down to the communication between myself and the LH team.
The building provides a safe, varied environment for the children (including a sensory room) with outside area (weather permitting). There are also activities organised within the local vicinity and input from other organisations.
My son moved over from the "baby room" into the main room, at his pace, to ensure he made the move across happily and when he was ready. Continuity alongside development and progress is clearly important to the staff.
The food is freshly made on site and a varied menu is available. He always eats well during his time there.
I don't have a great deal of experience with nurseries, but I am very happy with Little Horseshoe!

My son has been going to Little Horseshoe Nursery for about a year and a half. At first, he was unsure because it was all new to him but after a few visits, he couldn’t wait to go. The staff are amazing and very welcoming when you enter and leave. My son has come on loads since starting this great nursery

The staff are very friendly and accommodating.
My son loves going to nursery and his development has come on loads since attending.
Every session my son has done something different; painting, playing outside, splashing in the water table.
The staff are also very encouraging in supporting with things such as potty training and they are always ready to talk about his day.

My little boy started attending in April 2017. Communication is great and in the early days of the settling in sessions I was thrilled that they put my little one first & he was able to settle nicely with his key worker. Can’t fault any of the staff who all interact with my son now. They all make me and my son feel welcome when we arrive/leave and always have time to answer any queries I may have regarding hours/activities/etc.
The nursery layout itself is great and I believe it caters well for the age range of those children attending. My son is always playing with something different with one of the staff and telling me about it over tea.
The on-site kitchen is fabulous and it’s lovely to see freshly cooked delicious looking food which varies too, my little one loves eating his lunches with his friends.
Overall, I am extremely pleased with the nursery, teaching and staff and would recommend this to anyone wanting that ‘personal’ touch instead of big-play focused room.

Our 3 year old daughter loves going to Little Horseshoe Nursery. At the beginning, I thought that she wouldn't settle in very well but after her settling in sessions, she absolutely loves attending this nursery.
She has learnt so much and is learning new things every time she goes. I can not thank the nursery enough for all they do. They always accommodate hours if we need to change due to jobs.
I would like to thank the manager and her team.

I cannot be happier! My child absolutely loves coming to nursery and I am confident leaving her here. The staff are friendly, encouraging and caring and my child is excelling, I'm putting all of this down the staff and environment. I cannot recommend Little Horseshoe highly enough and look forward to hearing (and reading in my child's book) what they have been doing that day. My child started at 4 months and I have watched her grow into a caring, kind and intelligent child, who is always excited about the nursery and seeing her key-worker.

Having a ten year age gap between my two boys and now my daughter it was all new again. The nursery was kind, helpful and reassuring. They are mostly very good with my child, took three settling in sessions of which was lovely so that she could find her feet.

Put very simply

-Very poor communication with parents
-No special activities anymore -No sports days, Christmas plays, fetes or events to involve the children and families
-Toys and equipment are very tired, and out of date
-Same activities out day after day
-Very expensive, among highest in the area!
-No choice for meals -what they cook is what the kids get!
-No structure, it's a free for all-little phonics, rare continuity and very little teaching-mainly free play
-Management do very little to support hard working families
-No structure to entering or exiting - children have pictures on pegs but not enough pegs for all the attending children and coats and belongings are often thrown across the floor in piles, and if on peg, never the allocated one for your child. What's the point?

Overall we have been very disappointed. I will say that the care of the kids is good. The staff on the floor are obviously well trained and caring.
Our children are now not at Little Horseshoe Nursery.

Sarah, Digital Marketing Officer at Little Horseshoe Nursery responded to this review on 28 Jul 2016:

Thanks for your review, we value your feedback.

We aim to communicate with parents daily through face-to-face discussion, as well as newsletters and posters which help remind parents about upcoming events and other important information. We are also introducing a parents evening/consultation day in October, to allow feedback to be shared with parents in a more formal manner, in addition to face-to-face updates when dropping off and picking up children from the Nursery.

We take part in a local school sports day which all children have the opportunity to attend, as well as seasonal events such as ‘Mingle Jingle’, where parents are encouraged to join and make Christmas cards and other craft items with their children, a Christmas concert, a Summer fete (held on a Saturday so more working parents can take part), and we also welcome parents who would like to join our Nursery outings, such as woodland walks. We are always open to new ideas and suggestions for events and activities from our families and are passionate about involving parents in their child’s learning.

We were thrilled to be able to undertake a complete refurbishment in August 2014, during which time significant investment was undertaken to replace and replenish resources and equipment. We also set a yearly budget for replacement of resources, and parents are consulted on what new resources they would like to see in the Nursery.

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage, and plan for the interests, abilities and needs of the children attending. If a child has a particular interest in an activity and it is supporting their development, it may be left out for a couple of sessions to scaffold their learning.

We have recently conducted a review of the fees of other local nurseries, and found our current rate to be very competitive, particularly as lunch and snacks are not charged at an additional fee but included in the standard rate.
We are fortunate to have an on-site cook who freshly prepares lunches daily for the children. These meals include roast dinners, pasta dishes and home-made fish fingers. There is always a choice of vegetables and a vegetarian option is available. Parents are consulted as to the food they would like on the menu, and the menu is displayed on the wall near the kitchen for parents to check.

Following the Early Years Foundation Stage, we focus on learning through play based activities, adapted to suit each child’s interests, abilities and needs. During the Summer term a local reception class teacher works with the children moving to school in September to help prepare them. If there are other children who are at the appropriate age and stage of development where they would benefit from phonics, they are also included in these sessions. All sessions and activities are tailored to meet the needs of the individual child.

We are proud of our commitment to work with, and support, all families, and aim to include parents as much as possible in activities, events and outings. We have also agreed non-standard patterns of care such as allowing flexibility with session times, in order to accommodate working parents so they and their child do not miss out.

There have of course been occasions when children in their rush to get to an activity they find exciting, have put their belongings on the wrong peg or missed it altogether, resulting in some items being on the floor for a short time. We do recognise that having two children sharing each peg is not ideal, and we are purchasing a mobile coat rack to eradicate this issue.

We are committed to delivering the highest quality care and education for each child who attends Little Horseshoe Nursery, and always welcome feedback from parents to help us improve our service. Thank you for getting in touch and sharing your feedback.

I am happy the way the nursery is run. Since my little one has been going there he has really learnt a lot. The staff are understanding and supportive. I think its a lot better that the food is freshly cooked on site and there is a good range from week to week.

The setting has really improved in the last 12 months with the general feel of the place being more positive. A big plus is the home cooked meals on site, which are always a hit and value for money. A key factor when choosing childcare. My daughter loves it here and has made some great friends. Some good activities, play dough is a firm favourite.

Job Title: Nursery Manager

Description:

My connection with the Pre-school Alliance started in Williton with a short evening course in Pre-school Practice almost 30 years ago. More recently I’ve had the opportunity to broaden my early years’ practice by working for the Alliance in Children’s Centre, Nurseries and community Pre-schools in West London and now I am back managing Little Horseshoe Nursery. This experience gave me a greater understanding of working with children and adults from many different backgrounds. With such diverse communities I learnt how to appreciate the uniqueness that everyone brings to a nursery making every day different, plus I sampled some amazing foods from around the world.

I enjoy being outdoor tinkering around and want children to explore and become interested in the natural world.

Description:

I first started at Little Horseshoe Nursery as a student whilst studying my Level 3 in Early Years and Education. I applied for a flexible post in the nursery working when required with the 2,3 and 4 year olds. I now work at the nursery full time and lead the baby room, I enjoy seeing the babies achieve and learn new skills. I have a good bond with the babies and I also enjoy working with the parents and carers to develop relationships. Having spent time working across all age ranges of the nursery, I have a good understanding of how activities can be adapted to the child's individual needs, how children learn from the enriched environment using all of their senses.

I love my job and I would like to further my education to support my work with children, bring in new ideas and research into the nursery.

I have worked at Little Horseshoe Nursery for over 6 years. Working in Early Years has given me a huge amount of pride, especially working for Pre-School Learning Alliance and how we are able to care and educate for the children within the nursery. I really enjoy working with children and bring to life learning through play. We have planned sessions each day to engage and support children in their learning and development. I am proud of the achievements made by the children in the preparation for school.

Description:

I started at Little Horseshoe Nursery just after I finished my Level 3 CACHE Diploma in Childcare and Education. I started work as flexible staff and soon became a full time member of staff in the 2-4 year old room and occasionally I am back up person for the baby room. I really enjoy seeing the children learn, grow and develop, each day brings something new and seeing the children creating new opportunities through their play and being able to help them along the way.

Since working at the nursery, I have decided I would really like to pursue more SEND training to enable me to support children with SEN needs.
