The Little Acorns Nursery at Badminton Junior School

Westbury Road, Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol BS9 3BA

The Little Acorns Nursery is the start of an exciting educational journey. From books and stories, to first encounters with Science in their Forest School, to the chance to go swimming twice a week. Through imaginative play and creative activities, it's time to start learning!

The nursery accepts girls into the Little Acorns as soon as they turn three. They then move into Acorns Reception in the September after their fourth birthday. Their Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) education offers structured learning through play and activity, with small class sizes and specialist teaching.

Music, dance and drama are taught by specialist teachers and give girls many chances to perform. They also introduce French at this stage (with formal lessons later in the Junior School) and help girls to develop intuitive computer skills.

The building blocks for reading come from activities that encourage matching and pattern recognition: jigsaws, threading beads, and matching games go alongside listening to and enjoying books and stories and learning rhymes and songs. Soon, girls recognise familiar letters, including those in their own name.

The ‘Letters and Sounds’ Phase 1 phonics programme is used in Little Acorns. The Jolly Phonics scheme, a programme of phonic acquisition skills, is used from Reception and throughout the whole of the Acorns. Skills for Mathematics are also developed in the same style, beginning with matching numbers and quantities up to ten.

Early Years classrooms are on the ground floor of the Junior School building, each with direct access to a secure outdoor learning and play space. They are lucky to share a site with their Senior School, giving them the use of an indoor swimming pool, all-weather pitches and a gymnasium. Children sit down with their teachers to enjoy a healthy lunch, prepared on site, and also mid-morning and afternoon snacks.
