We love this nursery and can't imagine sending our children anywhere else - all the staff are fantastic, caring, engaging. Both children are thriving at nursery and really enjoy their time there. The facilities are excellent, as is the attention to detail and the variety of activities on offer.

Children 1st are a fantastic nursery. Both of my children have attended this nursery over the past 5 years.
They are welcoming to the parents and succeed in being as helpful as possible with any queries or issues.
Most importantly, they are so attentive to the children, treating them with love, care and respect. I have never had any worries or concerns about leaving my children in their care. I recommend them wholeheartedly.

As a first time mummy going back to work, I was very nervous and hated the thought of leaving my little baby boy at just eight months old but Children 1st were fantastic. They reassured me and were supportive. The staff are always happy to see him and he loves nursery. My son is now nearly two and has an amazing key worker and learns so much there. I would recommend this nursery without a doubt.

Marie Bagley, Nursery Manager at Children 1st @ Sheffield responded to this review on 19 Feb 2016:

Thank you so much for your kind review. You're not alone in worrying about leaving your child for the first time at nursery and equally not alone in quickly realising there was nothing to worry about and that your little one is actually having a great time learning and playing with their friends.

I will pass your comments on to the staff team who I know will appreciate them as much as I do.

Kindest Regards,

Marie Bagley
Nursery Manager

My daughter has developed so fast and she love going to the nursery every day. She started since she was 6 weeks old. The facilities are amazing with plenty to keep his young mind busy throughout the day. The staff are very friendly and they look after her in detail. I'm also happy putting her at Children 1st @ Sheffield. I feel it is safe place and secure to protect her while I'm a way. Thanks to all the staff in Children 1st @ Sheffield for their caring and behaviour with my child and me as well. I really appreciate that my baby is in secure and good place such as Children 1st @ Sheffield.

Leaving my only child at nursery for the first time was a very daunting prospect, despite having researched several nurseries and picking Children 1st @ Breedon House as the best, that first day was terrifying. However, the staff were fantastic, they welcomed my daughter with kindness, provided reassurance to me and were not judgemental when I phoned to see how she was. The daily information we get in her diary and updated on the EY log allow us to feel in touch with her despite being at work. She is growing in confidence and her willingness to try new things is amazing and we thank the staff for their encouragement. I can't recommend this nursery enough. Thank you Children 1st for taking such good care of our most precious thing!

My little one has attended children 1st from 9 months. From the time she started until now she has gained so much confidence, self awareness and has gained an understanding of other people's lives and cultures that myself alone couldn't have given her! During each room she has had amazing key workers who have treated her as an individual and have all loved and gained her trust which has made it easy for me to leave her knowing she is well cared for and having lots of fun whilst I'm at work! I've never been so proud as I was when my little shy girl took part in the nativity at Christmas this was a truly remarkable achievement for her and the staff which I am eternally grateful for! Thoroughly recommend this nursery!

My son has loved attending here since he was 2 1/2 we have watched him flourish into a happy confident boy. The staff have taken time to nurture & care for him but at the same time provide an environment where he is learning & developing key skills.

He loves the freshly prepared meals and enjoys a wide ranging diet with healthy snacks, additionally the staff sit with the children encouraging them to eat nicely & engage in conversation.

The children spend a lot of time out doors, my son loves the play equipment, the various bikes along with the opportunity to garden or play in the covered sand pit. This was one of the reasons we choose this nursery.

As a parent I was keen to find a nursery especially city centre which had firm safeguarding policies in place. After entering via a fob door, the receptionist or duty manager take time to know each individual child and their caregiver, I found this so reassuring, in fact all staff seem to know every child's name not just those in their group and will always say hello. I am always reassured that the policies are applied and not just in a folder.

My son has enjoyed great relationships with each key worker at each stage of his journey, he is genuinely excited to see them each morning, they work tirelessly to ensure that he is meeting key developmental stages, recording his progress, making & recording observation. His folder is available at all time, and my babies progress will also be recorded electronically which I believe will be additionally beneficially. Regular parent evenings have ensured we know what's happening, however I have also been able to arrange meetings if I felt necessary outside of these times.

My eldest is due to begin school in September, he is leaving a happy boy prepared for the next step. At the same time my youngest begins his nursery journey starting in the baby room, there was no doubt in our minds this was the place for him. Although it is daunting leaving my baby in someone else's care, the baby room offers home from home care where is individual needs are met, and I am reassured knowing he is in a safe environment receiving first class care.

My elder daughter left in September and my younger daughter is in Peter Rabbits. We love this nursery. The staff are brilliant and very professional. There is always a warm welcome and they genuinely care about your child and their development. The facilities are great with good outside space for a city centre nursery. They invest significant time in developing the children with my eldest being able to read simple books before leaving for school. I would not hesitate in recommending this nursery to anyone and in fact I have. This nursery is significantly better than any other I have looked at. The meals provided are fresh cooked and healthy and the files that they use to provide information on the development of your child are very full and detailed. In summary an excellent nursery, with great, friendly staff where you feel safe leaving your child in the knowledge they will be well cared for which is all a parent can ask for.

Fantastic nursery

Children 1st provides a loving, clean and modern environment in which my son is thriving. Children are exposed to and encouraged to participate in a broad spectrum of celebrations and activities. Everyday learning is made fun with children able to express their imaginations and creativity, whilst learning about seasons, numbers etc. My son loves going there, enough said.

Best choice we have made!

Our little boy has been attending Children 1st since just before he turned one (he is nearly 3 now) and we are very happy with our choice of nursery. Everything from the building facilities, set up and outdoor space is excellent. More importantly, the staff and management are great and we feel very safe and happy to leave him in their care. They listen to our child and to us, communicate well, help him grow and there's a flexible approach to the children's individual needs. Above all, our boy really enjoys his time at nursery and thrives and learns new things all the time.

First class nursery

My daughter started going to Children 1st Sheffield when she was 11 months. Our language is not English at home. I was worrying about her at the beginning as she couldn't understand the carer. It turned out that my worry is not necessary at all. All the staff there are very helpful, keep talking to her. She is turning to 2 years now, she can understand most of her career. She can also speaks a few English words even though we speak Chinese at home. I am very satisfied with this nursery. We will have our second child next May. We will definitely let our second to join child first. It is clean and cheerful interior design, healthy food/snacks. In short, everything is first class!

One of the best nurseries in town

Staff are always willing to help, encouraging children to take their own initiative. They do not always wipe my childs nose. Apart from that no other problems. My son feels happy to attend this nursery and enjoys spending his time with staff and friends.

We placed George at Breedon House after an unsuccessful placement with a child minder. From our initial visit to everyday George is in their care, we have found the staff to be extremely helpful, caring, personable and professional. Everybody from the managers to the cleaner and cook interact with George daily. Nothing is ever too much trouble for the nursery nurses. There is a clear development structure in place that is fun for George but has massively helped him grow. We have recommended Breedon House to others who have now placed their children. Brilliant!

First class all around

My daughter started going to Children 1st when she was 2 yo +. She never went to a nursery before, furthermore English was not our first language. So, naturally I have a lot to be concern about. It was needless concerns though - the management is really professional which makes her settling down easier (the manager, Ms Deborah is really kind and attentive, my daughter's keyworkers, Ms Mumtaz and Ms Rachel are kind and compassionate) the facilities are second to none, clean and cheerful interior design, healthy food/snacks and the list goes on. In short, everything is first class!

Based on my experience Children 1st day nursery in Sheffield have been providing excellent and effective caring for my child. Jamie was only 6 months old when he joined the nursery. He smiles every time when he sees his carers and socialises well with other babies. The note book records everything regarding Jamie's daily activity, the food he eats and his sleeping patterns. Which is very useful in keeping me up to date on a daily basis. Moreover, I've found that Jamie's experienced a wide range of fruit and veg for his lunch and tea which is fantastic. The variety keeps him interested and his pallet. The facilities are children friendly and the environment is clean. The staff at the nursery are always friendly and helpful and they keep Jamie entertained.

My daughter has been at Breedon House for a year now and loves it! All the staff are very friendly and professional. They endeavour to fulfil all educational and emotional aspects of being a child. My daughter loves the outdoor area of Breedon House with the slides and sandpits. There are regular parents evenings in which we are kept informed of your child's development. The staff are good fun but always professional, caring and structured.

Thee best Nursery in Sheffield! Look nowhere else!

My daughter has been with the nursery since she was 6 months old (she is now coming up to three in March) and I have nothing but high recommendations for this place! The staff and management are absolutely friendly and amazing, and have your children’s development and interests at heart. Each child is assigned a key worker, who for us, have been nothing but excellent in each of the rooms our daughter has been in. The wide variety of activities and facilities available in each of rooms is outstanding and they follow the early years foundation stage framework (EYFS) to a tee. They even have parents evenings to go through this with you twice / three times a year to show you the development of your child and what they will be doing next.

As a member of staff at The University of Sheffield, it is a perfect location for dropping off and picking up as it's literally a 5min drive / 10 min walk away. It is also a perfect location for anyone working within the city centre as it saves you trying to rush home through rush hour traffic. It is also close to the Children’s Hospital in case of any serious illnesses / injuries that may happen, (touch wood it hasn't so far), which was also a re-assurance for me. The opening hours also accommodate my early morning and late evening work patterns, (They open from 7:30am – 6pm on standard days, and they can accommodate for anything outside these times. These though need to be discussed beforehand). To my surprise, a lot of nurseries in Sheffield don’t seem to cater for this flexibility as they either open too late or close too early.

Their Ofsted inspection (link as follows for those that read them like me: http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/inspection-reports/find-inspection-report/provider/CARE/403676) was awarded 2 overall (Score = Good, with 1 = Excellent) with outstanding features in Aug 2013. With this report, the high recommendations from colleagues and from the first viewings that my partner and I had with the Nursery, we were definitely sure that this was the right nursery for our daughter. She has definitely come on leaps and bounds and I have been more than pleased and impressed with her progress, especially her attitude towards sharing and being kind to other children / people.

Following on from the comments below on how excellent this place is, I can only add to this list on how perfect this place is for anyone that is looking around at Nurseries. My personal advice would be to definitely consider this as a choice of nursery, as all my recommendations to other colleagues at the University, have also said similar things about this place.

Excellent Nursery, my daughter loves it!

My daughter has been attending since she was 6 months old and attends 2 days a week. There are multiple rooms for different ages. I love the baby room facilities with their outdoor prams for rocking the babies to sleep! The facilities are second to none with a huge safe outside play area and good sized rooms with everything you would want for your little one's development needs. Food is cooked fresh on the premises and unlike at home my daughter always eats everything! The staff are friendly and really take the time to talk to you, they also complete a daily diary so you can see what your little one has been up to during the day. I would highly recommend this nursery.

Excellent Nursery - Brilliant Staff

My Daughter attends this nursery two days a week and has done since she was 13 months old (she is now 3 years old). She absolutely loves her days at nursery. She has so much fun there, but also learns so much by interacting with the other children and staff. All the staff are so friendly and helpful (especially during important milestones such as learning to walk, potty training etc). I would and have recommended this nursery to many people. It will be a very sad time when my daughter leaves to start school.

My daughter attends this nursery 3 days a week & has done for the last 18 months. Its a great place, where I am more than happy to leave her, all of the staff are friendly staff, it has a varied menu of freshly produced food & a lovely homely feel to it.

There's plenty of activities to keep them entertained & a daily diary so you know what they've been doing.

The location is also great for anyone working in the city.

Happy child!

My son enjoys his time at nursery and often talks of his friends there. He eats and sleeps much better on nursery days than at home, and it's a warm, welcoming, fun environment for him to spend his time in. I really value the team and his key worker almost as extended family!

Breedon House, Sheffield - Great Nursery

I have been really satisfied with Breedon House Nursery. My daughter loves to go there and often doesn't want to leave at the end of the day!
I feel totally at ease leaving my daughter in the care of the nursery staff. They are always welcoming, friendly and caring. The nursery environment is safe and clean. The atmosphere is homely and fun. Considering it is located in the city centre, there is a surprisingly decent amount of outdoor space for the children to play in and this is put to good use.

The activities the children engage in are enjoyable and varied as well as educational. There is a wide selection of toys available to the children suited to the age group of the children in the room. The food is varied and nutritious. By sending my daughter to this nursery, I am certain that this has aided her development, her confidence and her social skills.

fantastic nursery

I send my elder son to this nursery full-time since he was four month old, for over three years. He absolutely loves to go to the nursery everyday. He learns a lot in the nursery, words, sentences, letters, numbers, etc. And, he also has a lot of opportunities in singing, dancing, painting. The whole environment and facilities in this nursery is safe and clean, so my son can play without any worries from me. All the staffs are nice and friendly. They offered both me and my son a lot of help when my son was little. I am extremely satisfied with this nursery and will send my younger son to this nursery very soon too. I highly recommend this nursery to every parents, who work in city centre.

Excellent nursery - would highly recommend it to any child.

My daughter has been attending Children 1st Sheffield Nursery branch full-time for over a year now. She really enjoys her time there.
The nursery is very clean (this was one of the main reasons we chose it!), good quality food in freshly prepared on site with plenty of healthy snacks in between the meals. There are plenty of activities and children play outside a lot (that is what we were looking for in the nursery) even in the rain as there is a sheltered area to protect them from getting wet. My daughter loves Funky Feet class with plenty of dancing, singing and running around with colourful ribbons. The reception staff and managers are always very welcoming and the staff are well-trained and friendly. The nursery in very conveniently located in the Sheffield city centre with lots of parking spaces available. I've already recommended the nursery to our friends and would strongly recommend it to everyone. Keep up the good work Children 1st!

Deborah Thorne

Job Title: Manager - Early Years

Description:

My Name is Deborah Thorne and I am the Early Years Nursery Manager for Children 1st @ Sheffield.

I have been working with children since the age of 16. I qualified as a Nursery Nurse in 1993 gaining my N.N.E.B Diploma in Nursery Nursing.

I then worked as a nanny for almost 2 years having sole charge of two boys Edward and Thomas who are now 19 and 21.

I started work for Children 1st Day Nurseries in May 1996 when they purchased the nursery that I was currently working in. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to grow with the Nursery right from day one and have gained a vast amount of experience. I have worked my way up from Nursery Nurse opening the baby unit, to Room Leader then to Deputy Manager and finally on to Nursery Manager in 2000. I have worked with all ages of children and enjoy the challenges that working with different aged children bring but I especially love the Early Years age group and this has been my area of specialism for a number of years.

While I have been with Children 1st I have managed the Newark Nursery for 6 months working with the team and the new Nursery Manager to build up occupancy levels. I then managed St Peters and St Paul Nursery for 2 1/2 years which I really enjoyed as this took me out of my comfort zone and I grew in confidence and was able to develop my own skills. I then came back to the Sheffield Nursery (home) in May 2009 were I have resumed my role as Nursery Manager for the Peter Rabbits and Early Years.

Through my role as Nursery Manager I have worked with diverse cultures and families with different needs and expectations, this has given me the tools to enable me to meet their different needs and make a real difference to children's lives, one of my passions is to be able to offer high quality childcare for ALL children regardless of their status.

My role as Nursery Manager also enables me to work with children with Special Education Needs (SEN) and become a linchpin with families and other members of my Nursery Team, giving our children the best start to their nursery education regardless of their abilities or needs.

I have also built a strong team who I work very closely with and feel I am a good role model to all staff members. I am a qualified NVQ Assessor and gained my Level 4 in Childcare and Education, I enjoy this very much and hope to continue to support all the trainee Nursery Nurses that train with us.

I became a Nursery Manager by chance as I had no desire to become one, I was more than happy being a Nursery Nurse and enjoyed the role as key worker to my children but through a passion for my work and the investment of Margaret I was encouraged to move up the ladder. I enjoy the challenges that being a Nursery Manager brings and feel that over the last 15 years that I have worked for Children 1st Day Nurseries I have gained so much and been able to give so much back.

I believe in the ethos of Children 1st Day Nurseries and am fully committed to our mission statement of: ‘Leading the way, shaping the future’ and providing high quality day care and education, my role as a Nursery Manager enables me to ensure that the children who use our setting are receiving the very best and I can ensure the quality is there all of the time this is why I have stayed with Children 1st Day Nurseries and will continue to stay until I am old and grey (if you let me)

I like lots of things about Children 1st Day Nurseries - the dedication to our small babies that we insist on, the quality environments, the sleeping outside in proper prams, the play experiences that the teams offer, the drive and passion of our teams and the on going commitment that we have to achieving the best that we can be.

I always feel proud when I attend outside training events as I know that out provision is up there with the best.

I hope I inspire other Nursery Nurses to be passionate and proud of the work that we do, and encourage new families to make that brave first step of bringing their children to nursery for the first time to start the education of their children.

Job Title: Manager of Jemimas, Bobtails and Peter Rabbits

Description:

My Name is Marie Bagley and I am the Nursery Manager for Jemimas, Bobtails and Peter Rabbits at Children 1st @ Sheffield.

Before starting work at Children 1st Day Nurseries I was a sole charge nanny for two little boys who I cared for, for 18 months.

I joined Children 1st Day Nurseries in 1997 as a trainee Nursery Nurse and completed my NVQ Level 3 qualification with the company. My training gave me lots of experience of working with babies and children from six weeks to twelve years by having the opportunity to work in all areas of the Nursery. I worked as a key worker for children for many years and built up relationships with children and their families.

Even though I had qualified as a Nursery Nurse my learning did not stop there, I have been given the opportunity to grow and develop my skills through in house and external training opportunities. I have continued to develop my own skills and was able to move up the ladder first working as a qualified Nursery Nurse, Room Leader and Deputy Nursery Manager before moving on to becoming a Nursery Manager.

I have been a Nursery Manager for eight years and have spent my time at our Sheffield Nursery. It has been a real pleasure seeing children grow and develop into independent, confident individuals as they move onto school.

As a company we celebrate and recognise our own staff’s achievements and the Sheffield Nursery has successfully received Nursery Manager of the Year twice and also as a team at Sheffield we have received Nursery Team and Nursery of the Year. We have also had great Ofsted inspections receiving elements of outstanding.

Children 1st Day Nurseries has an ethos in that children come first and are always striving to improve what we already do well, with a wonderful working environment that is welcoming and settling for children. Children grow and develop in small groups in a fun and safe environment making learning fun and developing children to be confident and independent ready for school.

I now have a daughter, Amelia, who attends the Nursery, as a parent I can’t think of a better place for her to be. Amelia has flourished and settled well in to the Nursery. This has been achieved by the quality of staff and our ethos in Children will always come first.

Like any other parent I only want the best for my daughter and Children 1st Day Nurseries is and always will be the best.
